All About Jacuzzis

A whirlpool is a tub fitted with piping, an electric pump and water jets. The pump circulates water through the pipes using an underwater suction fitting and several underwater jets. A Jacuzzi, on the other hand, is an iconic fixture in American homes today.

Indeed, the Jacuzzi trademark is shown in both the Oxford and Webster's dictionaries, recognizing Jacuzzi as the inventor of the whirlpool bath. Jacuzzi Bros. today is a global manufacturer and distributor of bath and plumbing products for the residential, commercial and institutional markets. Their products (marketed under a portfolio of brand names including Jacuzzi, Sundance, Zurn and Astracast) include whirlpool baths, spas, showers, sanitary ware and bathtubs, as well as professional grade drainage, water control, commercial faucets and other plumbing products.

The history of the Jacuzzi Company began in the early 1900's, when seven Jacuzzi brothers immigrated to California from Italy. They make aviation history by inventing the first enclosed cabin high-wing monoplane, which carried U.S. Postal Service mail as well as passengers from the San Francisco Bay area to Yosemite National Park. In 1956, the family's hydraulic knowledge was put to use when they created a portable hydrotherapy pump to treat a family member's arthritis. Soon, the J-300 portable pump was being sold to both hospitals and schools.

The innovative spirit of the Jacuzzi brothers was not lost on Roy Jacuzzi, a third-generation family member who began learning the business as a teenager. His passion for design and engineering came to a fore in 1968, when, by incorporating jets into the sides of a bathtub, he invented and marketed the first self-contained, fully integrated whirlpool bath, known as the Roman. Sensing that Americans were moving towards an emphasis on health, fitness and leisure, Roy peddled his invention at county fairs and trade shows, ultimately creating single-handedly a brand new industry. The Roman whirlpool became the epitome of relaxation in the 1970's, while the brand name Jacuzzi became imprinted in the minds of Americans.

As larger units were designed to fit several people, Jacuzzi incorporated heating and filtration systems to keep the water warm and clean, thereby creating the first spa in 1970. In 1979, all the family members left the business or retired except for Roy, who stayed on to run the Jacuzzi operation.

The 80's marked a decade of new Jacuzzi designs. The Avanza - the first hot tub/whirlpool bath product all in one, was created. It could be installed inside or outside a house. Other new designs included the Illusion - a large whirlpool bath that looked like a volcano coming up out of the ground - and the Fiore Corner bath which was the first corner to have built-in faucets and a re-circulation water rainbow that delivered a sheet of water down the rippled acrylic shell in the back of the unit.

Meanwhile, thanks to Roy Jacuzzi, the first to add a jet of massaging air to a standard bathtub, hydrotherapy was brought into the home. The benefits of hydrotherapy have been known for years and it has revolutionized the way people experience water. Medical research has confirmed that physiological changes are triggered by the temperature of the water and by the effects of weightlessness experienced in a spa. By providing a means to relax, reduce stress, relieve aches and pains and to sleep better, the Jacuzzi provides a revitalizing experience that enhances people's health and happiness.

Hence, in the early 1990's, acknowledging his innovations in hydrotherapy for home use, Roy Jacuzzi was inducted into the National Kitchen & Bath Hall of Fame.

Today, Jacuzzi has become the world's most recognized and largest selling brand of jetted/whirlpool baths and spas. In addition to the first whirlpool bath patent, Jacuzzi has 250 worldwide patents for advancements in pump systems, jet technology, air controls and product design, as it sets the standard world over.

Priding itself on its commitment to innovative products, Jacuzzi is now one of the most respected names in the swimming pool industry as well, known for its impressive line of swimming pool filter systems and pumps. Pumps and filter systems are the most important pieces of equipment for the swimming pool, keeping the water clean and clear. High quality Jacuzzi products include sand filters, D.E. filters and element cartridge filters for in ground and above ground swimming pools.
